Therefore, if someone is a teen or has a loved one who is a teen, it is important to know as much as possible about teenage alcoholism and underage drinking facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-group is-style-ataglance\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<h3>Article at a Glance:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Underage drinking is still a major problem in our society even though usage has been declining in recent years.<\/li><li>Binge drinking is common among teens who consume alcohol for the sole reason of getting drunk.<\/li><li>Drunk driving is a leading cause of death among teens in the U.S.<\/li><li>Teen drinking can lead to other drug use, academic problems, unplanned pregnancies, violent behavior, arrests and serious injuries.<\/li><li>A teen may need alcohol rehab if he\/she experiences problems with school, moods, memory or energy.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Teenage Drinking &amp; Alcoholism Statistics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past 15 years, teen alcohol use has been declining for the most part. However, underage drinking still remains a big problem. In addition, the decrease in underage drinking rates has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/cbhsq-reports\/NSDUHFFR2017\/NSDUHFFR2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stalled<\/a>&nbsp;since 2015. Overall, as of the most recent data available about underage drinking statistics in 2017,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/cbhsq-reports\/NSDUHFFR2017\/NSDUHFFR2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">19.7%<\/a>&nbsp;of all underage people aged 12 to 20 reported drinking in the past 30 days. Among children aged 12 to 17, nearly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/cbhsq-reports\/NSDUHFFR2017\/NSDUHFFR2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10%<\/a>&nbsp;have used alcohol in the past month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the risk of drinking among underage people&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/alcohol-statistics\/underage-drinking-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increases as they get older<\/a>. By the age of 15,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/underage-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">33%<\/a> of people have had at least one drink. By the age of 18, that number increases to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/underage-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility notes that the rate of current&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/alcohol-statistics\/underage-drinking-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alcohol consumption rises by age<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Less than 1% of 12-year-olds have had a drink<\/li><li>About 16% of 16-year-olds have had alcohol<\/li><li>About 46% of 20-year-olds have had a drink<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, the risk of drinking enough to get drunk also increases as teens get older. A graph from The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility of reported drinking patterns in 2018&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/alcohol-statistics\/underage-drinking-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">showed that<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>About 18% of 12th graders admit to getting drunk<\/li><li>About 8% of 10th graders report getting drunk<\/li><li>About 2% of 8th graders report to having had enough alcohol to get drunk<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is little difference in drinking in terms of gender. Boys are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/underage-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">just as likely to drink<\/a>&nbsp;as girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/alcohol-abuse\/survey-reveals-risks-before-during-after-addiction\/\">surveyed 2,136 American adults<\/a>&nbsp;who either wanted to stop drinking alcohol or had already tried to (successfully or not). We asked them about their alcohol use, reasons for drinking, alcohol-related outcomes, health and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results underscored the astonishing impact of teenage alcoholism. Among those surveyed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>10.1% had their first alcoholic drink at 11 years old or younger<\/li><li>37.5% had their first alcoholic drink between 12\u201317 years old<\/li><li>39.7% had their first alcoholic drink between 18\u201325 years old<\/li><li>12.6% had their first alcoholic drink at 26 years old or older<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Teen Binge Drinking Statistics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although adults of legal drinking age&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/underage-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drink more often<\/a>&nbsp;than teens, when teens do drink, they tend to consume more alcohol. Most teens who drink do so&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vitalsigns\/teendrinkinganddriving\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to get drunk<\/a>. This puts teens at risk of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/teen-addiction\/alcohol\/underage-binge-drinking\/\">binge drinking<\/a>. Underage drinkers consume about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/underage-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">90%<\/a>&nbsp;of their alcohol during binges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, high school binge drinking statistics show that most high school&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/66\/wr\/mm6618a4.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">students who drink<\/a>&nbsp;tend to binge drink. Binge drinking is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/cbhsq-reports\/NSDUHFFR2017\/NSDUHFFR2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defined differently<\/a>&nbsp;depending on if someone is male or female. For males, it is defined as having five or more drinks on the same occasion at least one day in the past month. For females, binge drinking means having four or more drinks on the same occasion on at least one day in the past month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to binge drinking, there is heavy drinking. Heavy alcohol use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/cbhsq-reports\/NSDUHFFR2017\/NSDUHFFR2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">means<\/a>&nbsp;binge drinking on five or more days in the past month. Data about binge drinking among teens suggests that as of 2017:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Almost&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/cbhsq-reports\/NSDUHFFR2017\/NSDUHFFR2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">61%<\/a>&nbsp;of underage drinkers admitted to binge drinking in the past month<\/li><li>About&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/cbhsq-reports\/NSDUHFFR2017\/NSDUHFFR2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12.5%<\/a>&nbsp;of underage drinkers admitted to heavy drinking in the past month<\/li><li>More than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/cbhsq-reports\/NSDUHFFR2017\/NSDUHFFR2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20%<\/a>&nbsp;of underage heavy drinkers also binge drank in the past month<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Teenage binge drinking also impacts students as they&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/teen-addiction\/preparing-child-for-college\/\">head off to university<\/a>. College binge drinking statistics are also concerning. As of 2016:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>About\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/time-for-parents-discuss-risks-college-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">38%<\/a>\u00a0of college students admitted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/teen-addiction\/alcohol\/underage-binge-drinking\/\">binge drinking in college<\/a> during the previous month<\/li><li>About\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/time-for-parents-discuss-risks-college-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10.5%<\/a>\u00a0of college students faced heavy alcohol use over the previous month<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Teen Drunk Driving Facts and Statistics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Car crashes are the leading cause of death among American teens. Many such crashes are linked to teen drunk driving. Being drunk causes many of the same impairments in teens as in adults, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Slowed motor functions<\/li><li>Slowed reaction time<\/li><li>Blurry vision<\/li><li>Distorted perception<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcohol can also cause blackouts. During a blackout, a person is completely unaware of their surroundings and actions. An overly drunk teen may not remember how their night ended. In all too many cases, they wake up in the hospital after a car accident \u2014 or don\u2019t wake up at all \u2014 and seriously injure unsuspecting passengers, people in other cars or pedestrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teenage drinking and driving statistics\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vitalsigns\/teendrinkinganddriving\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">show that<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Teen drunk driving accidents occur in 20% of teen drivers involved in fatal crashes. The blood alcohol level in these teens was higher than the adult legal limit in 81% of cases.<\/li><li>Teens drink and drive about 2.4 million times a month<\/li><li>About 10% of teens in high school will drink and drive<\/li><li>About 85% of teens in high school who drink and drive also binge drink<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, it is important to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/teen-addiction\/drug\/how-to-talk-about-drugs\/\">educate teens<\/a>&nbsp;not only about the risks of drinking and driving but also to help them&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vitalsigns\/teendrinkinganddriving\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plan for situations<\/a>&nbsp;to avoid it. For example, teens should be taught to never drink and drive. They should also be taught to never get into a car with a drunk driver. Parents should consider offering to transport a teen or pay for a ride if the driver would otherwise be drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Risks of Underage Drinking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The spectrum of risks associated with underage drinking is vast. Drinking can impact a teen\u2019s young life in many different ways. Along with the significant&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/teen-addiction\/alcohol\/effects-teen-brain\/\">impact of alcohol on the brain<\/a>, teens who drink are at risk of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"is-style-columns-2\"><li>Using other drugs<\/li><li>Alcoholism<\/li><li>Arrests<\/li><li>Physical and sexual assault<\/li><li>Serious injury<\/li><li>Problems in school<\/li><li>Unplanned pregnancy<\/li><li>Violent behavior<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Common causes of alcohol-related deaths in teens&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/underage-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">include<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"is-style-columns-2\"><li>Murder<\/li><li>Alcohol poisoning<\/li><li>Falls<\/li><li>Burns<\/li><li>Drowning<\/li><li>Suicide<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Alcohol poisoning can be fatal. Problems in school are common in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/teen-addiction\/alcohol\/teen-alcoholism\/\">kids who drink alcohol<\/a>. Falling grades or getting caught drinking can lead to or expulsion. In addition, high school students who drink are also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/report_3196\/ShortReport-3196.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more likely to drop out of school<\/a>. Drinking can also lead to long-term effects on the brain. These effects include an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000528.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased risk of<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Feeling anxious<\/li><li>Depression<\/li><li>Low self-esteem<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3>Alcohol Abuse<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people are surprised to learn that teen alcoholism exists. However, research suggests that teen alcohol abuse can be an important problem. In general, the younger a person is when they start drinking, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/10729\/chapter\/1chapter\/5#63\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more at risk<\/a>&nbsp;they are of alcoholism.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/10729\/chapter\/1chapter\/5#63\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies show<\/a>&nbsp;that teens who start drinking before the age of 15 are at a higher risk of alcohol abuse than people who start drinking at older ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, the risk of developing a problem with alcohol use later in life is increased as well. Teens who begin drinking before age 15 have a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/10729\/chapter\/1chapter\/5#63\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">41%<\/a>&nbsp;chance of struggling with alcohol dependence when they are older. Among people who wait until age 21 to start drinking, the risk of alcohol dependence later in life is only&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/10729\/chapter\/1chapter\/5#63\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10%<\/a>. Teens and alcohol are, therefore, a dangerous mix not just in the short-term, but in the long-term as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/10729\/chapter\/1chapter\/5#63\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to 12%<\/a>&nbsp;of young people ages 12 to 20 years old meet the criteria for a diagnosis of alcohol abuse or dependence. This pattern may continue as they get older. About&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/10729\/chapter\/1chapter\/4#39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12%<\/a>&nbsp;of teen males and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/10729\/chapter\/1chapter\/4#39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3%<\/a>&nbsp;of teen females are chronic heavy drinkers in high school and continue to drink heavily as adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Risk factors for a teen having an increased risk for alcohol abuse later in life&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26630381\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">include<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Having gotten drunk three or more times in the previous year<\/li><li>Having a low income<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Does Your Teen Need Alcohol Rehab?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, teen drinking problems may be hard to notice.
