As of 2016,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2722576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4.4<\/a>&nbsp;out of every 100,000 adults died of an overdose involving a benzo. Many overdose deaths linked to benzodiazepines also involve other drugs like opioids:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/drug-topics\/opioids\/benzodiazepines-opioids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 30%<\/a>&nbsp;of opioid overdoses involve a benzo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"librium-drug-combinations\">Librium Drug Combinations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, benzos like chlordiazepoxide are taken in combination with a variety of other substances. This is known as polydrug use. While it\u2019s difficult to determine exactly how many people dependent on benzos engage in polydrug use, experts have found that the vast majority of benzo overdoses involve&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/drug-topics\/trends-statistics\/overdose-death-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other substances<\/a>&nbsp;like opioids. Combining benzos and opioids is so dangerous that the FDA issued a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=e3ff8641-ae8a-4016-acb1-cb1b7890f5ed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black Box Warning<\/a>&nbsp;to caution against taking them together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consuming alcohol after taking chlordiazepoxide is known to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/benzodiazepine-addiction\/mixing-benzodiazepine-alcohol\/\">produce intensified sedation<\/a>. Opioids are mixed with chlordiazepoxide for similar reasons \u2014 because both produce relaxing, euphoric effects, they intensify each other when taken together. Cocaine and chlordiazepoxide are often used together for the opposite reason \u2014 as a stimulant, cocaine can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/cocaine-addiction\/side-effects\/\">raise energy levels artificially<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the effects of polydrug use may be pleasurable in the short-term, they dramatically increase the risk of addiction and negative side effects, including blackouts and extreme sedation. This causes a number of short-term effects,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/factsheets\/benzodiazepines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"is-style-columns-2\"><li>A sense of calm or euphoria<\/li><li>Vivid or troubling dreams<\/li><li>Amnesia<\/li><li>Hostility<\/li><li>Irritability<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Overdose can occur and may be fatal.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/factsheets\/benzodiazepines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Signs of overdose include<\/a>&nbsp;shallow breathing, clammy skin, wide pupils, weak and rapid pulse and unresponsiveness.
