People with an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/process-addiction\/exercise-addiction\/\">exercise addiction<\/a>&nbsp;may use marijuana for those reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exercise addiction is somewhat different from other&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/process-addiction\/\">behavioral addictions<\/a>&nbsp;(process addictions) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/drug-addiction\/\">substance addictions<\/a>&nbsp;because it is an excessive behavior and its adverse effects might not be readily apparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-group is-style-ataglance\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<h3>Article at a Glance:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Exercise is usually a healthy activity, but it becomes an addiction when it is compulsive and consuming, despite negative consequences<\/li><li>It is a common belief that marijuana enhances exercise performance, but it actually impairs it<\/li><li>Exercise addiction is a dysfunctional coping mechanism for the stress of mental health disorders<\/li><li>People with exercise addiction are especially prone to substance use<\/li><li>Treatment of exercise addiction and marijuana use is possible for anyone, with the right help<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Do People Use Marijuana and Exercise?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpubh.2019.00099\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>&nbsp;showed that using cannabis before or after exercise is common. The study showed that among people who combine exercise and marijuana use, most believe that it enhances their enjoyment of exercise, recovery from exercise and even motivation to exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionandmetabolism.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/1743-7075-10-71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>&nbsp;published in \u201cNutrition and Metabolism\u201d pooled all the available scientific evidence concluded that marijuana has no physiologic benefits for exercise. The study found that using marijuana:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Increases resting heart rate and blood pressure, thereby reducing heart output and physical work capacity by 25%<\/li><li>Reduces muscle capacity and time to exhaustion<\/li><li>Causes a decrease in general performance, balance, reaction time and muscle performance for about five hours<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The belief that marijuana improves motivation to exercise appears to be flawed as well. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologicalpsychiatryjournal.com\/article\/S0006-3223(13)00502-7\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">well-designed study<\/a>&nbsp;showed that dopamine is reduced in marijuana users. This effect reduces motivation, often resulting in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/news\/124806\/long-term-cannabis-blunt-brains-motivation-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amotivational syndrome<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, marijuana is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/cjsportsmed\/Fulltext\/2018\/09000\/Cannabis_and_the_Health_and_Performance_of_the.9.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not banned from sports<\/a>&nbsp;by the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) because it is performance enhancing. It is banned because of safety concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>The Relationship Between Exercise Addiction and Marijuana<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People with exercise addiction are more likely than the general public to have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/mental-health\/substance-abuse\/\">co-occurring substance addiction<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3210598\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15 to 20%<\/a>) or another behavioral addiction (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3210598\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">25%<\/a>). They are even more likely to smoke cigarettes, which are well known to have significant,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/data_statistics\/fact_sheets\/health_effects\/effects_cig_smoking\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detrimental health effects<\/a>. Such addictions co-occur because the addictive behaviors and substance use are associated with the release of brain chemicals that improve mood and counteract the negative feelings associated with stress, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/marijuana-addiction\/withdrawal-detox\/\">symptoms<\/a> of mood disorders, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/mental-health\/depression\/\">depression<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/mental-health\/anxiety\/\">anxiety<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is characteristic of people with addictions to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1994667\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rationalize drug use<\/a>, often using reasons that are illogical or irrational. As such, some people may use their belief that marijuana improves their exercise performance as a way to excuse their marijuana use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While marijuana has no role whatsoever in the treatment of exercise addiction, it has been established that healthy, controlled exercise may be an effective&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5055462\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adjunct treatment<\/a>&nbsp;for cannabis use disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Dangers of Using Marijuana with Exercise Addiction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The sedating&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/marijuana-addiction\/side-effects\/\">effects of marijuana<\/a>&nbsp;use, as well as its negative effects on balance, muscle coordination and reaction time make people more likely to injure themselves during exercise, especially in activities that require attentiveness and dexterity, such as sports or weight-lifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People with exercise addiction are especially vulnerable to injury because they tend to exercise for long periods at a high intensity.
