This article reviews the components and parallels between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/alcohol-abuse\/\">alcoholism<\/a> and other chronic diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>What Is a Chronic Disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To compare alcoholism to chronic diseases, it can be helpful to understand the medical definition of chronic disease. Chronic disease is classified as one that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/series\/sr_10\/sr10_259.pdf\">lasts three months or more<\/a> and has other common features, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Vaccines cannot prevent them.<\/li><li>They cannot be cured by medicine.<\/li><li>They do not just \u201cgo away.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the CDC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/resources\/infographic\/chronic-diseases.htm\">six out of ten Americans<\/a> have at least one chronic disease. Some behaviors contribute to chronic diseases, including using tobacco, not being physically active and having poor eating habits. Some of the most common chronic diseases include arthritis, cardiovascular disease, breast and colon cancer, obesity and oral issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chronic diseases are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/about\/index.htm\">top cause of disability and death<\/a> in the U.S. and the leading contributor to the nation\u2019s $3.5 trillion in annual health care costs. While no cure may exist, many chronic conditions can be managed or treated with lifestyle changes or certain medicines. While medications can treat the symptoms of many chronic conditions, these drugs often have their own side effects and may also interact with one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>What Is Alcoholism?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcoholism, also called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/alcohol-abuse\/alcoholism-vs-alcohol-use-disorder\/\">alcohol use disorder<\/a>, is using alcohol in excessive amounts and being unable to control one\u2019s use of alcohol. Someone who has an alcohol use disorder isn\u2019t able to manage their drinking. Alcohol use disorder may be characterized as mild, moderate or severe, and every category has its own symptoms and side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcohol use disorder was previously broken into two categories by the medical community: abuse and dependence. It\u2019s now measured on a spectrum. Depending on the number of criteria a person meets, they can be diagnosed as having a mild to severe alcohol use disorder. Some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/alcohol-abuse\/am-i-an-alcoholic\/\">alcoholic diagnosis criteria<\/a> include having a craving to use alcohol, drinking more than intended or continuing to use alcohol despite problems in relationships. Research shows that alcohol use disorder often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/mental-health\/substance-abuse\/\">co-occurs with other mental health disorders<\/a>, including bipolar disorder and major depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcoholism and alcohol abuse are serious problems in the U.S. In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/alcohol-facts-and-statistics\">14.5 million adults<\/a> had alcohol use disorder, with only 7.9% receiving treatment. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/understanding-alcohol-use-disorder\">National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism,<\/a> the following risk factors contribute to alcohol use disorder:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Drinking prior to age 15<\/li><li>Genetics and family history<\/li><li>Mental health disorders and history of trauma<\/li><li>Heavy alcohol use and binge drinking<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, it is a combination of genetics and environmental risk factors, such as stress or trauma, that leads to the development of an alcohol use disorder. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/teen-addiction\/alcohol\/teen-alcoholism\/teen-alcohol-abuse-risk-factors\/\">People who begin drinking early in life<\/a> (prior to age 15) are more likely to become addicted than people who wait until age 21 to drink.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>When Alcoholism Becomes a Disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be difficult to determine when alcohol use becomes alcoholism, but in the simplest terms, it\u2019s often when a person loses control over their use of alcohol.
